Karega Ani is a performance poet and music producer from Houston, TX. A one-time student of the legendary Ntozake Shange, he has been refining his unique literary and performance style for nearly 20 years.

Karega began developing his craft while earning his BS in Psychology at Prairie View A&M University. It was there that in 1998, he was afforded the opportunity to study African American Literature under the tutelage of Dr. Ntozake Shange (the award-winning poet and playwright of “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuff” fame). Dr. Shange made a concerted effort to have her students study and analyze the works of poets and essayists representing The Harlem Renaissance, The Black Arts Movement, et. al.. It was in the midst of this that Karega discovered, and began developing, his distinctive literary voice.

Simultaneously, Karega began exploring the intricacies of music, beginning with the ancient and captivating rhythms of the Djembe drum, and progressively delving into the interdisciplinary art of music production. It should be noted that this was not Karega’s first foray into musicianship. As an adolescent, he would constantly have rhythms and harmonies playing in his head. A nameless symphony for one performed by an ethereal and fleeting composer, frantically seeking release. Over the years he joined multiple choirs, even the school band in hopes that they could teach him how to free these lucid melodies.

Alas, try as he might, he couldn’t make the clarinet manifest the multifaceted cacophony dancing behind his eyes. He hadn’t yet developed the language to explain the beauty that only he could sense – and so every chance he’d get he danced with wild abandon. He devoured every chord and riff that he could find on tape, CD and vinyl. With every dissected harmony and line he silently prepared to meet himself later in life.

It has been said that when the student is prepared, the teacher will appear. Fast forward to June 2000. Home for the summer after sophomore year, Karega happened upon an advertisement for MTV Music Generator, which was, in essence, a digital audio workstation in the form of a game for Sony Playstation . He ran right out and purchased it, and upon completing his first composition he instantly felt a shift. He’d finally found the means by which he could release the obstinate chorus that had been the solitary soundtrack to his life for over a decade, and he was forever changed.

Since that time, Karega has gone on to independently release 3 albums and multiple poetry chapbooks. He represented Houston on its first, second, and third National Poetry Slam Teams (not to mention his representing Detroit in 2006). He has performed at venues from coast to coast, both individually as well as alongside literary luminaries the likes of Sunni Patterson, Saul Williams, The Last Poets, Mutabaruka, Taalam Acey, et al. He has also been published in The Pierian Literary Journal (Albany State University) and has graced the pages of many, many other publications over the span of his career. Karega Ani will soon be releasing his long anticipated debut poetry collection entitled “Wailing”.

He is currently based in Houston, TX. He is a proud husband, and father to two beautiful and dynamic children.
